The world's most prestigious award in entrepreneurship and small business research, the International Award of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Research, has this year been presented to Dr. Zoltan J. Acs and Dr. David B. Audretsch.

Dr. Zoltan J. Acs and Dr. David B. Audretsch have been presented with the International Award for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Research 2001. The award consists of the statuette, "The Hand of God", created by Carl Milles and $50,000.00

This is the sixth time the International Award for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Research has been presented. The award has been instituted by the Swedish Board for Industrial and Technical Development, NUTEK, in collaboration with Telia AB and the Swedish Foundation for Small Business Research (FSF).

The Award is presented annually to a person who has made a scientific contribution to theory-building concerning at least one of the following areas: entrepreneurship and small business development, the role and importance of new firm formation, and the role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in economic development.

The Scientific Council of FSF states the following motive for their choice:

Together as a research team as well as each in his own right, Dr. Zoltan J. Acs and Dr. David B. Audretsch have made a number of significant contributions to entrepreneurship and small business research. In their research they have provided empirical analyses of an impressive number of important questions concerning the role of small firms in the economy, and from this body of research their collective seminal work on the role of small firms in innovation deserves special recognition. Two issues should be highlighted: the systematic analysis of how this role varies depending on the characteristics of industries, and also how conclusions concerning the role of small firms in innovation are sensitive to the type of measure of innovative activity applied.

Apart from their own empirical work, Professors Acs and Audretsch have made an important contribution to an open and critical assessment and discussion of the role of small firms in the economy. While this involves organizing several prestigious conferences and editing of book volumes, the single most important contribution of this kind is their pioneering of the Small Business Economics journal as a high quality outlet for small business economic research. This achievement alone has significantly contributed to advancing knowledge development in the last decade.
