CALL FOR PAPER PROPOSALS

WORKPLACE DIVERSITY:
A RESEARCH PERSPECTIVE ON POLICY AND PRACTICE
JUNE 13-15, 2000, BRUSSELS

During Sweden's chairing of the EU in 2001, the National Institute for Working Life (NIWL), endorsed by the Swedish Government, is organizing a large international conference, Work Life 2000. The conference will be preceded by more than 50 international scientific workshops, focusing on almost every aspect of modern work life. The result of these workshops will serve as the basis for the Work Life 2000 Conference.

In cooperation with the National Institute for Working Life, the Swedish Council for Work Life Research is organizing a workshop that will focus on the theme of Workplace Diversity. The workshop aims to address both practical and policy questions related to managing diversity including the negative and positive consequences of diversity for work-related outputs, the circumstances under which managing for diversity enhances the composition of skills and abilities in the labor pool, and whether managing for diversity is an ephemeral or permanent change in management philosophy. Scholarly papers are sought on the following aspects of diversity (heterogeneity) in work organizations:

  1. Empirical studies testing hypotheses pertaining to attitudinal affects or work outcomes;
  2. Policy studies pertaining to one or more units of government or corporations including policy implementation and policy evaluation studies; studies comparing the way managing diversity policies are applied in growing and declining economies;
  3. Methodological studies focusing on issues of measurement and interaction effects; modeling, and reliability and validity;
  4. Case and benchmark studies describing or assessing policies and practices in one or more work organizations/teams including the way managing diversity is practiced in organizations with declining size or profitability.

About 15 papers will be selected based upon proposals submitted for review. Applicants should send a short description of their proposed paper including its title, research methodology, expected outcomes/contribution, and the names and affiliations of all authors. In the case of multiple authors, please indicate the presenter. Participation is not restricted to members of EU states, but will be geographically balanced. Applicants are asked to provide their institutional affiliation, position, and citations for their relevant published work as part of their submission. Please provide mailing address as well as e-mail and fax.

Proposals must be received no later than 15 September 1999 and applicants will be notified by 10 October. Proposals may be sent by post or fax to the address below or may be sent electronically in-text (do not send attachments). Workshop versions of selected papers must be received by 1 April. All papers presented at the Workshop will be included in a volume of Proceedings, which will be distributed in advance of the meeting. Participants will be asked to prepare verbal comments on other papers in the Proceedings. Guidelines for manuscript format will be sent with notification of acceptance. Workshop results will be summarized in a final report and plans for further collaboration are under development.
