The third prong of the Institute’s mission involves educating the public about conflict management and alternative dispute resolution. Four Institute staff members teach ADR-related courses in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University- Bloomington. One staff member also teaches at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. In addition to courses, the Institute staff is also involved in presenting workshops and training seminars in topics such as conflict resolution, mediation and interest-based processes. Below is a listing of some teaching activities in which the Institute is involved. Courses Taught Negotiation and Alternative Dispute Resolution: This is a 3-credit upper-level undergraduate class that introduces students to the theory and practice of negotiation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR). Students explore the three primary ADR processes (negotiation, mediation, and arbitration) and several hybrid processes, and examine how these processes are used to resolve disputes in different contexts. The primary objectives of the course are to teach students basic conflict resolution skills that they can use in everyday life, to help them understand the various ADR processes and how they are used to resolve disputes; and enable students to critically assess issues in this new and developing field. (Instructors: Nan Stager, Lisa Bingham, Lisa-Marie Napoli and Tina Nabatchi) Negotiation and Alternative Dispute Resolution: This is a 3-credit graduate-level course that is also offered to executive education students. Although the course content is similar to the undergraduate course described above, topics are covered in more depth and at a more advanced level. (Instructors: Lisa Bingham, Nan Stager) Public Policy Mediation: This course is third-year law course that is also open to practicing attorneys. The course is designed to meet the state requirements for those wishing to register as civil mediators. The focus of the course is on mediation skills, mediation law and ethics, and the use of mediation to resolve public policy and multi-party disputes. (Instructors: John Krauss, Nan Stager at Indiana University Law School at Indianapolis) Environmental Conflict Resolution: This 3-credit graduate-level class focuses on the use of ADR processes such as collaboration, facilitation and mediation to resolve environmental conflicts. Emphasis is given on both conflict resolution theory and skills practice. (Instructor: Nan Stager) Trainings ICRI staff provide
mediation, interest-based negotiation and conflict resolution trainings and
workshops upon request. In addition to introductory trainings, staff have
also provided advanced trainings for specific issues such as public policy,
community, family, and race and class disputes. Trainings have been provided
for staffs of state agencies, volunteer mediators from the local community
mediation program, members of a state professional planners organization, a
group of Russian educators and civilian employees of the Navy. |
