Professor Grønbjerg's interests focus on the nonprofit sector, broadly defined and the sector's relationship to government. Her current work examines the scope and community dimensions of the Indiana nonprofit sector. Other research and publications focus on the American welfare system, nonprofit funding relations, nonprofit capacity, and nonprofit data sources. She received the 2005 Award for Distinguished Achievement and Leadership in Nonprofit and Voluntary Action Research from ARNOVA (Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action). For more information, see full background sketch.
Several surveys of Indiana nonprofits, including one currently recently completed for the Indiana Arts Commission on capacity-building and technical assistance based on a similar survey conducted for the Indiana Grantmakers Alliance and Lumina Foundation for Education in 2007. An initial 2002 survey of Indiana nonprofits of all types included large enough samples in each of twelve communities to profile the sector in each of those communities, as well as statewide. Several reports from that effort are now available.
An analysis of Indiana nonprofit employment that provides information on the size, composition, and distribution of paid employment in the Indiana private nonprofit sector, with comparisons to for-profit and government sector employment and trends over time. Several reports are now available.
The first-ever statewide database of all types of nonprofits – charities, congregations, advocacy, and mutual-benefit organizations of all sorts – a total of almost 60,000 nonprofits for the state of Indiana, soon available as a searchable database at the website of the Indiana Business Research Center. Most recent effort is an analysis of 6,152 Indiana nonprofits that lost their federal tax-exempt status because they failed to meet new reporting requirements.
Community dimensions of the Indiana nonprofit sector - analysis of how the sector varies among Indiana counties and selected communities across the state, including profiles of the nonprofit sector in those communities.
Interviews with Indiana residents to examine their trust in nonprofits in comparison to other institutions, and the extent to which they work for, attend meetings at, or do volunteer work for nonprofits.
