Welcome to the official web site of the Indiana Clean Lakes Program! The Indiana Clean Lakes Program was created in 1989 as a program within the Indiana Department of Environmental Management's (IDEM) Office of Water Management. The program is administered through a grant to Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) in Bloomington. The Indiana Clean Lakes Program is a comprehensive, statewide public lake management program having five components:

Our Mission

1. Public information and education

bulletproduce and distribute the quarterly Water Column newsletter
bulletsponsor the annual Indiana Lake Management Conference
bulletprepare informational brochures
bulletprepare lake assessment reports
bulletconduct training and informational workshops

2. Technical assistance

bulletassist lake associations with interpreting water quality data
bulletattend lake association meetings
bulletpresent programs to lake associations

3. Volunteer lake monitoring

bulletcitizen volunteers monitor water transparency on 80 Indiana lakes
bulletvolunteers in an expanded program collect monthly samples for total phosphorus and chlorophyll a analysis

4. Lake water quality assessment

bulletconduct routine assessments of water quality on Indiana lakes
bulletidentify regional and/or temporal patterns in lake data
bulletidentify lake conditions that warrant further attention

5. Coordination with other state and federal lake programs

bulletwork with other state and federal agencies to coordinate efforts and enhance the protection of Indiana lakes
