ASPS was created in 1999 to promote unity and cohesion among the SPEA Ph.D. student body by
fostering academic and social interaction among the PA, PP, and ES Programs. The organizational structure of ASPS provides for two
representatives from each of the three Ph.D. programs, as well as one
member-at-large position. These representatives form the Executive
Committee (ExComm) and select a chairperson, vice-chairperson, treasurer
and secretary from the members. Elections for ExComm are held in late
November or early December; the new executive committee takes office at
the beginning of the New Year.
In addition to ExComm, ASPS
has also formed a number of committees to fulfill its specific goals.
These committees have enabled ASPS to sponsor and organize a number of
events, such as:
-
The annual Ph.D. student
conference (see link from home page);
-
Workshops, including
CV-writing and understanding the dissertation process;
-
Topics course competition,
where Ph.D. students have an opportunity to design, develop, and teach
their own special topics course; and the
-
Annual 'welcome to SPEA'
picnic.
