ASPS Ex-Comm Meeting

AGENDA

I.                    Fall Events

a.       New Student Orientation and Picnic

                                                               i.      Any reactions/thoughts?

b.       Bakesale—Maxine

                                                               i.      Esteban’s workshop idea

 

v      It was agreed that the picnic was a huge success with a great turnout from both faculty and students.  There was plenty of clean-up help and the new students seemed proactive about meeting others. 

v      Lessons for Next Year’s Picnic

Ø      We like the site, but be sure to reserve it early (June)—cost is $41

Ø      Get an ES student to lend you the cage key and you can borrow the coolers (they have tons) and get ice from the ice maker

Ø      Get the SPEA credit card from Carol but keep in mind that there is a limit of the number of charges that can be made on it in one day

v      Becky says that the student directory and newsletter will be coming out soon

v      Professional Workshops

Ø      Campus Writing project workshop on Sept 12th during Roger’s Friday seminar

Ø      October’s workshop will be on the 24th or 31st about endnote/procite

Ø      November’s workshop is on networking

Ø      Esteban has requested a workshop on ergonomics, like proper sitting and posture techniques since we will spend the rest of our lives at desks

v      Bakesale

Ø      David has made about 12-24 mugs that can be sold for around $8 each or whatever we can get to maximize the profits

Ø      Use of bakesale money—we don’t need to outfit the new lounge because SPEA seems to have the money to help us get furniture and new fridge, etc.  The money will be earmarked for PhD Conference support—probably student paper awards. 

Ø      Bakesale is scheduled for Tuesday, September 16th from 8:30am to early afternoon

Ø      Rob will email Chad about using the atrium

Ø      Ginger, David and Maxine will bring their coffee pots so that we can provide coffee as well

Ø      Becky will email the ASPS lists to get people to bring baked goods and to sign-up for a time to watch the table

Ø      Maxine will make a poster to hang up for publicity

Ø      We have some cups and napkins, but need to buy creamer, sugar, filters, more cups, stirrers,

Ø      Maxine will get change to use (about $20 worth)

v      Coffee Hours

Ø      First one will be held on Friday, September 26th after Roger’s seminar (1:30pm) in the lounge

Ø      Ginger will talk to Roger about making the announcement

Ø      We will provide some kind of food items—donuts, bagels, muffins, etc.

 

II.                 PhD Student Conference

a.       Let’s begin to make plans

 

v      No time to discuss this item—saved for next meeting

 

III.               Other Reports/Updates from Officers

v      Ginger is having problems accessing our webpage

v      The good new is that we now have a link from the main SPEA page to our website

v      We are planning a potluck in November or December
