v Rob will ask Deepali to make a buddies/mentor list for the new students
v Becky will ask Carol for a copy of last year’s orientation schedule
v It was decided to provide again this year the four orientation activities that have been provided by ASPS in the past
Ø Informal Q&A session—possibly on Thursday of orientation week
Ø PhD student mass meeting—on Tuesday of orientation week
Ø PhD student happy hour—on Tuesday following the mass meeting
Ø SPEA Picnic—on the Saturday of orientation week, Aug 30th
v We discussed that we need to be better about publicizing these activities this year, especially the picnic
v David will plan and coordinate the picnic
v We discussed making a student directory with phone numbers and other information—Becky will take charge of this
v Professional Workshops
Ø We decided on a schedule for professional workshops for next school year
§ September—Teaching, grading papers, etc.
§ October—Endnote and Procite, through the library
§ November—Networking, online and through conferences
§ January—CV workshop, teaching philosophy
§ February—grant writing, grant finding
§ March—PhD conference, making a good presentation
§ April—writing workshop
Ø We also decided that Roger’s Friday thing can help to cover some other topics that we have found helpful in the past, such as the human subjects
Ø ASPS members will also collect websites and links for the workshop ideas that Abby passed out so that we can put them on the web as well as have workshops on them
v We appointed someone to be in charge of coffee hours, but I can’t remember who it was—maybe Ginger?
Ø We discussed potential days and locations for the coffee hours, but nothing was finalized
Ø Potential locations—lounge or seminar room
Ø Number of times per month—still not sure about this one, we discussed the pros and cons of having it every week or just once a month
v Maxine was appointed to be in charge of the bakesale in the Fall

v We need to apply for CASI funds now if we want them because otherwise they might run out of money—we can apply for funds for the PhD conference
v Maxine will explore GRIF again—we’ll discuss it next time
v We discussed putting exam readings lists on the web, Becky will forward them to Ginger
